Situated in northwestern Hokkaido, Rumoi Port was first opened in 1936 as a designated international trade port and subsequently developed as a coal shipping port. Currently, it plays a major role as a distribution hub in northern Hokkaido, as well as a base for offshore/coastal fisheries.
