Stretching from east to west, Tomakomai City is surrounded by nature, including Mt. Tarumae to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. In downtown Tomakomai, red and white chimneys tower over the Oji Paper plant.
Skating - especially ice hockey - is very popular in Tomakomai, and the city is home to the gOji Eaglesh, which take part in Asia League Ice Hockey. Several skate rinks are located in the city and are often used by the locals.
Specialties of Tomakomai include haskappu berries, which once grew naturally in the Yufutsu Plain. The purple fruit is mainly used as an ingredient for confectionery.
Surf clams are a new specialty of the city. The seafood was designated as the gShellfish of Tomakomaih in 2002, and every November the Surf Clam Festival is held.
