Lake Utonai
This freshwater lake is located in the northwestern part of the Yufutsu Plain. Known as a treasure trove of plants and paradise for wild bird. The lake is one of Japan's most important stopover and wintering sites for migratory birds.. In 1991, Lake Utonai became Japan's fourth wetland to be registered under the Ramsar Convention.
Mt. Tarumae
With an academically precious lava dome designated as the natural ‚onument of Hokkaido, Mt.Tarumae is known as the triplex active volcano, which is rare throughout the world.

Recommended Spot

Stretching from east to west, Tomakomai City is surrounded by nature, including Mt. Tarumae to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. In downtown Tomakomai, red and white chimneys tower over the Oji Paper plant.
Skating - especially ice hockey - is very popular in Tomakomai, and the city is home to the gOji Eaglesh, which take part in Asia League Ice Hockey. Several skate rinks are located in the city and are often used by the locals.
Specialties of Tomakomai include haskappu berries, which once grew naturally in the Yufutsu Plain. The purple fruit is mainly used as an ingredient for confectionery.
Surf clams are a new specialty of the city. The seafood was designated as the gShellfish of Tomakomaih in 2002, and every November the Surf Clam Festival is held.
