Situated roughly in the center of the west coast of Hokkaido, Otaru Port is a good natural port surrounded on three sides by mountains. The port was improved as a coal shipping port in the past, and designated as a port for foreign trade in 1899. With advantages, such as good access to the prefectural capital Sapporo (approx. 1 hr.) and its location within walking distance of tourist spots in the city, the port has attracted many cruise ships in recent years.
