Abashiri Port faces the Sea of Okhotsk in northeastern Hokkaido. In the past, the main goods handled at the port were marine and forestry products, but in recent years timber has been replaced by the increasing amount of coal handled there. Situated at the northern hemispherefs southernmost limit of drift ice, the port acts as a major drift-ice viewing spot during the ice-floe season.
