Kushiro Port is a major port on the Pacific Ocean coast of eastern Hokkaido. The port's proximity to one of Japan's most prominent food supply areas, which produces dairy products and other primary commodities, as well as it being the port in Japan closest to North America, makes Kushiro Port an important junction in land and sea traffic networks and a key distribution base in eastern Hokkaido.
