Shiraoi Poroto Kotan
An Ainu Museum introducing the life and culture of the Ainu, who lived together with their gods of nature, is located here. In the "space of tranquility and healing" away from the bustle of everyday life, the traditional culture of the people is studied and handed down.
Lake Kuttara
Situated in the special area of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, this sub-orbicular caldera lake, approximately 3 km in diameter, has no in-flowing or out-flowing rivers. The lake boasts water quality that was once recognized as the highest of all the lakes in Japan.
Historical site of the Sendai clan's garrison in Shiraoi
The garrison, established in Shiraoi in the Edo era to guard the northern region under the orders of Japan's Feudal Government who feared that Russian forces might advance southward, was the largest of its kind in Hokkaido. As a nationally designated historic park, it conveys the atmosphere of the era along with the former site of the Sendai Clan Manor House in which displays of historical materials can be seen.
Noboribetsu Hot Spring
One of the best hot spring resorts in Japan is located in the city of Noboribetsu adjacent to Shiraoi. As much as 10,000 tons of hot-spring water gushes from the 11 different sources, prompting the resort to be known as a "department store of hot springs." Hell Valley, a volcanic explosion crater situated approximately 450 m northeast of the resort, provides an exquisite view. Shiraoi Port is the closest anchorage site to the area.
Shiraoi ? a treasure trove of foods
Visitors to Shiraoi can be satisfied with Hokkaidofs culinary culture, as it is surrounded by the sea and mountains that provide numerous delicacies, including Japanese Black Cattle Shiraoi Beef and horsehair crab and cod roe that are landed on the foreshore. Shiraoi is also one of the largest egg-producing areas in Hokkaido.
