The amount of the cargo handled at Tomakomai Port accounts for 50% of the total port cargo in Hokkaido, and is the fifth largest in Japan. The amount of domestic-trade cargo handled at the port is the largest in the country. This large artificially excavated port, which is the first of its kind in Japan, plays a major role in economic development in Japan.
