The area around Urakawa Port has a relatively mild climate compared to other parts of Hokkaido, and with local agencies from government offices located nearby, the port plays a leading role in the political, economic and cultural activities of the Hidaka region. Industries in the areas around the port include fishing, mainly off the Erimo coast; Japan�fs most prominent thoroughbred horse production, as well as limestone and olivine mining.
