Nemuro Port Tourist Information

Cape Nosappu
The easternmost cape in Japan. The lighthouse standing at the tip is Hokkaidofs oldest, and was built in 1930. Around the cape, which affords views of the Northern Territories, are Bokyo no Misaki Park ? which Kuruma Stone below the Hanasakicontains the Shima no Kakehashi statue ? and Hoppo-kan (a museum of the Northern Territories).
Lake Furen/Shunkunitai
Approximately 330 species of wild birds have been observed at Lake Furen. Around the lake is a sand bar called Shunkunitai. The pure Sakhalin spruce forest there gives it a primeval feel. This is an ideal place for bird watching.
Kuruma Stone (Wheel Stone) below the Hanasaki Lighthouse
The uniquely shaped Kuruma Stone is located on a cliff below the Hanasaki Lighthouse. It is a basalt radial joint in the shape of a wheel as the name suggests. The rock, measuring 6 m in diameter, is rare the world over and designated as a natural treasure.
Escalope
Escalope is the name of a special Nemuro dish - butter rice topped with pork cutlets and special demiglace sauce. Recently, the dish is becoming popular among people not only in Hokkaido but also in other prefectures.
Saury sushi rolls
It is difficult to talk about Nemuro without thinking of saury or kelp. A new local cuisine created by combining the two specialties, saury sushi rolls are served in seven restaurants in the city. The dish is very popular.

Recommended Spot

Nemuro is the easternmost municipality in Japan. The long, narrow Nemuro Peninsula that protrudes out to sea divides the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk. At the tip of the peninsula is Cape Nosappu, which affords views of the Northern Territories. Kaigara Island, which is one of the islands that form the Habomai Islands included in the Northern Territories, is only 3.7 km away from the cape and on fine days can be seen with the naked eye.
Why not enjoy the things unique to Nemuro: Escalope, saury sushi rolls, the Saury Festival featuring saury fresh from fishing boats, the Nemuro Crab Festival featuring the precious Hanasaki crab, watching numerous wild birds around Lake Furen/Shunkunitai, and walking along the footpaths while enjoying the magnificent nature and learning about the history of the area.
